Fails with "Please update GMail" and "Something went wrong - try again"

Marcin Mikołajczak hace 12 años actualizado por katzoft hace 11 años 10
When trying to add any of the apps widgets I get these two messages as popups and the Play Store opens with the GMail app. It's up to date, as well as the system (Xperia S with the latest ICS update). Am I missing something?

Marcin,
we test our apps on a variety of devices, however, we cannot cover all of them. Unfortunately, we haven't tested it on the Xperia S. If you continue to experience this issue, please send an email to support@katzoft.com requesting a refund.

I'm actually much more interested in helping to get this working - I haven't found any other app that could do what yours does. I managed to get one step further in the meantime, as the GMail app did finally update.

I can get to widget settings and add them to my homescreen now, but:

  • when the settings dialog shows up I get two "Something went wrong - try again" popups
  • label dropdown is empty for all accounts
  • when switch accounts "Something went wrong - try again" pops up once
  • if I ignore this and add the widget it obviously shows 0 all the time
  • all the 1-line widgets (4x1, 2x1, 1x1) have an incorrect size - the widget selection dialog visualizes them as 4x2, 2x2 and 2x2 respectively, and they are scaled up on the homescreen

Is there anything else I can do to help?

You can go into the Gmail app and make sure all labels are synched (Label settings > Sync messages > Sync: All). Also, you can wait a few hours and check for an update for Gmail Widgets (new version 3.32).
Today's update to your app fixed the label issues - I can select them and the widget shows unread message count correctly. But the widget sizes are still incorrect and appear scaled with a white non-transparent background. Hope this feedback helps.
That's great news! About the background - is it always white even if you select another theme, like glass?
Ok, glass has a transparent background :) Now I get it, non-glass options have solid background? I guess that makes sense for some other phones? But this is still an issue: all the 1-line widgets (4x1, 2x1, 1x1) have an incorrect size - the widget selection dialog visualizes them as 4x2, 2x2 and 2x2 respectively, and they are scaled up 2x on the homescreen.
That's right. There are solid, semi-transparent and transparent backgrounds to choose from.
As for the size issue, different launchers allocate different amounts of space to widgets. I will remove the annotations (e.g. 4x1) in one of the next releases to avoid confusion. The list and stack widgets are resizable anyway, so it shouldn't be an issue.
I don't know, it seems specific to only 1-line widgets that render incorrectly, the other (resiable I guess) are fine.
Could this be an issue with high pixel-density of the device that needs some conditional treating? I haven't seen such a problem with any other widget on my phone.
Anyway thanks for your real-time support :)
I was also getting the "Something went wrong - try again" message. I bought the full version today, tried to install it and got the message. Then I realised I needed to install the Gmail app in order to get the correct sync settings, so I did that, but still got the message. Rebooted, same thing.

Then I uninstalled the app and reinstalled it, and everything's fine now. Just a note in case this happens to anyone else.

HTC Wildfire, running CM7.
Thanks for sharing, John. The Gmail app (latest version) is indeed needed for Gmail Widgets to work.
