widget does not update

Robert van der Laan 12 years ago updated by printer-reset Mario Bandulik 9 years ago 13

I have a widget for the inbox of my Gmail account. In Gmail the inbox folder is set up with 30 days synchronization and notifications enabled. Despite this configuration, the widget is not updating with new messages. I see that I have new messages from the Android status bar, but the widget does not update.  Only when I manually refresh, new messages are shown in the widget. How can I fix this?

That's strange. I need some more information from you to diagnose the problem.

How long did you wait after seeing the notification?

Is the new message arriving in a custom folder or in the standard inbox?

Which phone are you using and is it rooted?

I waited at least an hour.  I have attached screen captures to illustrate.  The first screen capture of 10:48 shows in the status bar that I have received messages through Gmail with the Gmail icon.  The widget however does not show any new items and was not refreshed since 08:32.  Once I manually refresh the widget shows that I have three new messages and the first one arrived at 09:27 second screen capture of 10:49).  All new messages are arriving in the standard inbox.  I have a Samsung Galaxy SIII and it is rooted.

Thanks for the information. Is this a custom ROM or a non-standard homescreen or both?

This is a the MIUI ROM based on JB 4.1.2.  However, the problem with the widget not updating precedes the use of this ROM.  Even when I was on stock ROM (ICS 4.0.4) the widget was not updating. I only had this ROM for a couple of weeks.  I have had a paid version of Gmail Widgets at least for four months, even before I had the Galaxy SIII.  I was using the widget already on my Galaxy SI with Android 2.3.  Even then the updating of the widget was not consistent.  I only reported this now since I finally had the time to provide the feedback and see if this can be fixed.

After extensive testing, I was not able to reproduce these issues. One of they key features of the widgets is that they should have updated as soon as you receive new emails, so by the time you unlock your phone, you can see them right there on your homescreen.

I don't have any of the devices you use though, so can anyone else who is using an S3 (with or without a custom ROM) post their experience? The forums are also there for users to help each other :)

I am having the same problem with a Galaxy S III SGH-T999 stock non rooted 4.1.1 (Tmobile USA). GW doesn't auto update for Gmail, but does for SMS and missed calls. Not sure when this issue started. I'm not even sure if it ever auto updated on the S III. I'm using Nova Prime launcher, but I tried using the widget in TouchWiz and had the same problem. I've tried different widget related settings in Nova without any success (including hidden "labs" settings). Not sure if it is related, but I'm having what appears to be the same issue with APW Google Reader. The stock (ugly white) widgets work just fine. I really like this widget, so I'm hoping you can fix this.

@Dan: This is a known issue. Please do a search before posting to avoid duplicates.
